What is Frankenstein actually about?
"Frankenstein" refers to Victor Frankenstein, an ambitious scientist who creates an artificial being. Frankenstein believes that by creating "The Creature", he can discover the secrets of life and death, create a new species, and learn how to renew life. He wants to achieve something great, even if it comes at a great cost.
What about this "Creature"?
The Creature feels betrayed by Frankenstein for abandoning him after his creation: "He had abandoned me: and, in the bitterness of my heart, I cursed him". The Creature also feels rejected and outcast by the entire human race, and feels humans have treated him unfairly because of his appearance. He feels alone and lonely and longs for love and acceptance.
This maelstrom of emotions plays out so beautifully that it's easy to see why Mary Shelley's classic novel is a timeless masterpiece and literary favourite. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have.
